A Yooper Mystery Novella, Murder Bites the Bullet
From National Bestselling Author, Deb Baker

Sixty-six year old Gertie Johnson and cohorts Cora Mae and Kitty have a knack for stirring up trouble in what was once a quiet backwoods community in the heart of the Michigan Upper Peninsula. When Finnish resident Harry Aho (sometimes pronounced A-hoe) takes a bullet at his kitchen table, Gertie suspects it has something to do with the public shooting range he set up right on the property line next to a Swede. The Trouble Busters bring out the big guns to crack this one, including deer cameras, a riot gun, and faithful Fred, the semi-retired police dog.

Murder Bites the Bullet Yooper Mystery Novella A Gertie Johnson Murder Mystery Book 4 edition by Deb Baker Literature Fiction eBooks

Murder Bites the Bullet: A Gertie Johnson Murder Mystery has a lot going for it.

Gertie and her friends are "characters". They are the eccentrics that are often portrayed in stories with small-town ambience. She runs her life by her own set of rules, which often do not meet with the approval of her son, the local Sheriff. Of course, the feeling is mutual. Gertie thinks of her son as rather stodgy and limited. There are lots of other quirky characters and relationships. Gertie's mother-in-law is an equally strong and independent person, an irrational wild card in any discussion. Gertie's two friends who "help" solve the crimes are each, in their own way a unique, independent sort. The teamwork here is a model for nobody to emulate.

The plot itself is handled adroitly, with a kind of logic to the investigation that suits Gertie's approach to life. The ending is satisfying and the events look plausible in retrospect.

The story is told with a light-hearted tone that matches the central character perfectly. I would call this smiling humor-- occasionally it was laugh-out-loud funny, but for the most part is was amusing and enjoyable.

The book provided a relief from psychopaths and gore. I enjoyed reading a book that was very light on profanity and sex for a change.

If you're looking for an easy-going, well-written mystery, that deals with ordinary people with motives and behavior from daily life, I recommend this one.

Murder Bites the Bullet Yooper Mystery Novella A Gertie Johnson Murder Mystery Book 4 edition by Deb Baker Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

Deb Baker did it again. Gertie and her friends can get in more trouble than you can shake a stick at. This time they are investigating the murder of a man who opens a rifle range. Then there's the moonshine. Who did it and did they get caught? Guess you'll have to read the book. I've read each one of Deb's Gertie Johnson books and have enjoyed each one.
I thoroughly enjoy this series! Gertie, her family, her 60 year old friends and her sort-of faithful dog really make an enjoyable cosy mystery! Ms.Baker has captured up north living in MI and has made the characters truly believable. A delightful read! Have read the whole series, enjoyed them all and look forward to the next one!
This Gertie Johnson murder mystery begins wonderfully, reads quickly and gets to desert too fast. Once you are used to Gertie mysteries, you expect a few more twists and unexpected turns or even a careen off the road. A few of those elements are found in this story but not a full meal. Well written as usual but with less spunk and guts than previous novels. Simply stated... very good but not filling.
Since I live in MI, "below the bridge" (Mackinaw) I'm what UPer's call a "troll." I vacationed there throughout my life, and have numerous friends born and raised there. Gertie, her family and friends are a bit wackier than most of my friends, additionally they're a bit more entertaining. I save Ms. Baker's Gertie Johnson Murder Mysteries for stressful days when I find it hard to concentrate. I've found them to be simply fun to read. Thank you, Deb Baker; you've helped me get through some darn uncomfortable days.
While the reader must be ready to suspend disbelief to enjoy Murder Bites the Bullet, the effort is worth it. It involves a colorful group of wacky individuals, each with his or her distinct personality. Gertie, along with her two co-horts, must contend with a obstreperous mother-in-law and an overbearing and dense son (the sheriff) as they put their investigative skills to work to solve the murder of Harry Aho. The long-standing feud between the Finnish and the Swedes in this Upper Peninsula town appears to be a catalyst in the murder, along with the fact that Finnish Harry established a shooting range right next to his Swedish neighbor's property. Gertie is drawn off in other directions, though, including the discovery of a moonshine still. Who knew that a raffle at a local store would provide the clue that allowed Gertie to begin unraveling the puzzle.

Kick off your shoes and curl up for the duration. This one is a fun ride.

I was so happy to see another Gertie Johnson book. I read the first three in this series and laughed out loud all the way through them. It was the same with this fourth one. Some writers just have the ability to hold your interest more then others and Deb is one who`s books {at least the Gertie series} I read very quickly because it is just one fast-paced, crazy and funny experience after another. I wish I had Gertie's and her two zany, comical friend's energy {I am also in my 60's}. I love a mystery with (real) humor in it and an ending where you usually can't guess who-dun-it. I am sure there are eccentric characters in the UP of Michigan that come a little too close to fitting the descriptions of Gertie's family, friends and associates! Hee-hee.
Please write more books in this series, Deb. I will be on the lookout for them. By the way, I also loved being able to get these books on my .
The Gertie Johnson mysteries are fun and quick to read. The characters are easy,, easy to like - a little outrageous but not so much as to not be believable. The setting is the upper peninsula of Michigan (UP as the locals call it) and the politics and views of personal rights are certainly different than mine, but Deb Baker does a good job of making it feel okay to like guns and mistrust the government if one lives in the U P. The murdered victim is usually not a "good guy" so the reader doesn't get caught up in mourning the victim. Gertie has two partners who assist her in the solving of the crime - very different from each other but, like Gertie, very likeable. There is even a love interest for Gertie - her next door neighbor, George (Gertie is a widow and dearly loved her husband) but this love interest is very secondary to the plot (thank goodness). I read these books when I am tired of the hard-core mysteries and when my life needs a smile and maybe even a laugh out loud.
