It starts with a telegram. MGM wires young Lucille LeSueur to tell her that she's been placed under contract at a princely $75 a week, and is expected to report immediately to Hollywood, California. A fresh-faced 17-year-old with big eyes and an air of elegance, she would go on to become one of the greatest stars in Hollywood history the fabulous Joan Crawford.
Through four marriages, countless cocktail parties and more than 100 appearances in film and television, Joan lived the life of a legend from the first day she stepped onto the back lot. After becoming famous in the silent era, by 1938 she was dubbed "Box Office Poison," and her career was considered over - but Crawford never quit. Over the next 40 years, she clawed her way back to the top, and in this engaging autobiography, she tells her story - her way.

I read this entirely in Joan's voice. I recently became interested in classic cinema when I discovered the talents of Lon Chaney Sr., who starred with her in the silent picture "The Unknown".It's difficult to find all of Joan's films, I've only watched 12 or so, but I am a huge fan of hers. I'm 27 years old and can still appreciate her talents, struggles, her complexity.
I saw the ugly portrayal of her in Mommie Dearest as a child, some of which I believe is an honest portrayal and some of which I believe to be an exaggeration from a child's POV. I don't know if that's the real Joan or how honest she is in this book, but I believe she believes it.
Considering her childhood, living through the beginnings of Hollywood, etc. I personally think that she isn't expected to be perfect. It was nice to be able to get her side of the story, her perspective. I think her fans are TRUELY FANS and will want to read this, without the influence of a review.
If you're interested in Joan and would like to know more, you may enjoy this. I feel that if you haven't heard an outside perspective, it might be harder to understand as she doesn't always go into great detail regarding tougher subjects. It's written as though you already know her life, this is just her side of it. After all, she's Joan Freaking Crawford-- she was the original. The biggest. The legacy.

A Portrait of Joan The Autobiography of Joan Crawford (Audible Audio Edition) Joan Crawford Alyssa Bresnahan Graymalkin Media Books Reviews
Didn't know that it was a coffee table book. But still very nice.
Incredible book! Makes me love Miss Joan Crawford even more!
its still grinding!!
Boring and unrealistic. Joan's narcissistic personality is on display throughout the book..which makes for a difficult read. Not enjoyable. A disappointment.
I enjoyed reading this. In many cases, I feel she glossed over the truth or made up her own truth about various incidents. I'm not sure that her marriage to Mr. Steele, which she glorifies over and over, was THAT fabulous. What I did like was reading about her early years in movies and her climb to the top. She was one of the lucky few who happened to be in the right place at the right time and did not succumb to drug addiction or other deadly vices. I found the information about the transition from silents to talkies good, too.
I really enjoyed learning about Joan's life. It made me love and respect her as an actress even more. I downloaded the book and I also got the audio version. It was recorded in her own voice! What a delightful surprise that was for me. Well done and great insight into her love life and career.
If you love Joan you will love this book. Yes it may be dated but it is all Joan...all the time! The Audible version is also worth checking out as Joan reads the book herself.
